This two-hour webinar provides a practical overview of an interval-based toileting procedure that participants can begin implementing the following week. The presentation will cover why delayed toileting can impact children and families, how to identify meaningful readiness signs, and how to determine when a learner is ready for toilet training. Participants will learn how to train caregivers and staff to implement the procedure in person, through telehealth, and in school settings when home-based training is not possible. The webinar will also cover nighttime toileting and the use of token economies. A case study involving the toilet training of an eighteen-year-old with incontinence will be reviewed and discussed. Finally, punishment-based toileting procedures will be discussed based on the existing literature, including why these procedures are generally not recommended.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe an interval-based toileting procedure, including the use of a token economy, and state the criteria for advancing the interval.
  • Distinguish the readiness signs that genuinely matter from those that mainly delay training, and identify the autism-specific barriers that call for a procedural adjustment.
  • Train a caregiver or staff member to run the procedure using behavior skills training, and explain why written instructions alone do not produce usable fidelity.
